1. Entering the State of Ihram
Ihram is not just the white cloth you wear; it is a state of mind.
For Men: Two pieces of unstitched white cloth.
For Women: Normal modest clothing that covers the body.
The Miqat Rule: Since flights from Dhaka fly over a point called Yalamlam, you must change into your Ihram at the airport in Dhaka or on the plane. Don’t wait until you land in Jeddah, or you might miss the boundary!
2. Performing Tawaf (Walking Around the Kaaba)
Once you reach the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah, you will walk around the Kaaba seven times. Start at the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad). During this time, you can make any dua you want. Isn’t it amazing to think you are standing exactly where the Prophets stood?
3. The Sa’i (Safa and Marwah)
After Tawaf, you will walk seven times between two small hills: Safa and Marwah. This honors the story of Bibi Hajar searching for water for her son, Ismail. It is a long walk (about 3 km total), so take your time.
4. Halq or Taqsir (The Final Act)
To finish your Umrah, men must shave their heads (Halq) or cut their hair short. Women just need to trim a small bit of hair (the length of a fingertip). Once this is done, you can take off your Ihram!
Managing Logistics
When you land in Jeddah, the airport is very big. If you are with a group, look for your guide holding a sign. They will take you to a bus for the 1-hour drive to Makkah.
